The Work We Do: Omega Robinson Creating Pathways at Sankofa School of Success

City Connects Coordinator Omega Robinson is making a difference in her school and community. She was recently featured in a video for Sankofa School of Success as part of National School Counseling Week.

“Robinson brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the City Connects program,” the video said. “(She) helps to create true pathways for families to overcome systemic adversity in the 46218 zip code.”

Sankofa School of Success Inc. at Arlington Woods Elementary School 99 is a Jumpstart Campus within the Indianapolis Public Schools Innovation Network. It’s one of several charter schools that are part of Indianapolis Public Schools, which allows families to choose from multiple educational settings.

City Connects has been implemented in Sankofa School of Success since 2022, and Robinson has been the Coordinator there for the last three years.

“One thing I love about the City Connects program is it empowers our families and our community. It also enhances the learning of our students while they’re here in the school setting and helps them feel seen and heard.”

Robinson has made a deep impact on the entire school community.

“She is a burst of sunshine on our campus, connecting families with resources,” Sankofa principal Lauri Hargrove said. “She is always here for our students, making sure they receive what they need. She is a gem here on campus.”

Providing grief support at school

As a City Connects Coordinator at the Sankofa School of Success in Indianapolis, Ind., Omega Robinson saw students at her school who had lost loved ones and needed help coping with grief.

So Robinson reached out and formed a partnership with Brooke’s Place, a local nonprofit organization that provides “support groups, therapy services and education to empower children, teens, young adults, and their families to thrive in the midst of grief.”

Forming this partnership helps Sankofa achieve its work of “creating a collaborative school community that focuses on student achievement” and meets students’ needs “through mindfulness and trauma-informed care.”
